An odd ending to this event came by the way of lighting strikes, which led to a substantially shortened race ended under the red flag.
A month ago we made a post outlying what makes Corvette Racing such a dominant force in sports car racing. They win more often than not and it’s not by chance.
What we learned is that their team’s focus, adaptability, and overall preparation is second to none on the grid.
Last weekend at the Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park, they proved yet again that Corvette is synonymous with winning.
The Corvette Racing team was able to walk away with a one-two finish in the top-level manufacturer-backed GTLM class, beating out rival Porsche.
One-two finish marks the fourth win out of fives races for Team Corvette
Unexpected weather conditions forced the race to end disappointingly early with about an hour left on the clock. The cause was severe lighting strikes that had continually bombarded the local area around the track.
By the time the tumultuous conditions had subsided, the stoppage was deemed final as local law prevents racing to occur after 6 PM. The archaic law has existed unchanged since the 1950s.
While under undeniably unpredictable circumstances, the Corvette Racing still put themselves strategically in the best possible position to win. Race-winner and No.3 C8.R driver Jordan Taylor stated,
It was about fuel mileage, saving tires and getting through traffic cleanly. Thankfully we executed well and the driver change went well. We knew the weather was imminent at some point and that it could be red-flagged, so we knew track position was going to be important. Thankfully we were out front when that came.
With this latest victory, the team’s No.3 C8.R has won four out of five races this season and an overall 100th win for the team. That’s an amazing streak so far.
When asked about their stunning consistency this season, Taylor stated,
I think just the No. 3 car in general is clicking very well…I think everyone is executing on every level. On track, Antonio [co-driver of the No.3] and I and the guys on the team are doing a great job on the pit stops and strategy. They’re doing a great job. So, another Corvette Racing 1-2 and Antonio’s first win here at Lime Rock. We’ve got five or six more to go here this year, so hopefully we can keep the trend going.”
Their sister car, the No.4 C8 R (co-driven by Tommy Milner and Nick Tandy) is still itching to get their first points-scoring victory of the season. Their next opportunity will be at IMSA Sportscar Weekend at Road America in early August.
With the dominance of Corvette Racing this season and the new amazing announcement of the C8 Z06, Chevy is clearly firing on all cylinders in 2021.
