Corvette Grand Sport Replica From ‘Fast Five’ Is Headed to Auction
It’s one of just three surviving Corvette Grand Sport replicas out of 12 that were used to film one iconic scene.
The original Corvette Grand Sport is perhaps the most coveted Corvette of all, a race car designed to dominate the Shelby Cobra on the race track whose existence came to an abrupt and untimely end. Ultimately, just five examples were built, but more than one company will happily sell you a replica today. This Corvette Grand Sport replica, which is going up for grabs at an upcoming Volocars auction on April 14-24, is one of them. But it’s far more special than your average replica.
This Grand Sport, built by General Motors licensed manufacturer Mongoose Motorsports, was one of 12 specifically made to be used in the movie Fast Five. Of those dozen cars, just three survived, and this green-screen-only example is obviously the nicest of that trio since it wasn’t used for any stunt work. But it’s still a real-deal movie car, one that was featured on the big screen right alongside the late Paul Walker and Vin Diesel.
Not only that, but those that have seen Fast Five know that the Grand Sport plays a role in one of the movie’s most memorable scenes when Diesel’s character Dominic Toretto drives it off a moving train and subsequently off a cliff and into a river below, but not before saving Walker’s character, Brian O’Conner, from impending doom.
Once the filming of Fast Five was complete, the movie’s transportation coordinator purchased the Grand Sport replica and added it to his personal collection. It was then bought by the auction house and served as part of its expansive movie car and museum prop collection, much of which is now being sold at auction.
As for the car itself, the Corvette Grand Sport wears silver paint and is powered by a crate GM Performance 350 that cranks out 380 horsepower, which is backed up by an automatic transmission. Sorry – no constant banging through the gears, which is a signature Fast and Furious move. The replica rides on a full tube chassis with suspension components lifted from a C4 Corvette.
This sweet movie car is going up for grabs with no reserve and has an auction estimated hammer price of somewhere between $95k-$100k. Given the fact that these replicas aren’t cheap to begin with and throw in its big-screen appearance, and we’d say that isn’t a bad price at all – especially if you’re an F&F fan.
