C8 Corvette Dominates Shelby GT500 on the Half-Mile!
No matter how much prep, no matter how much the launch control is set, none of the 760 horses of the GT500 could catch up to the Corvette!
Isn’t funny how everyone likes to take a swing at the Corvette? On the track, on the strip, on the street, everywhere the ‘Vette goes, haters are sure to follow. But why? It’s America’s sports car, after all. Is it because beating one would be like beating Connor McGregor?
Perhaps so. Yet, the Corvette is the car to beat in order to be the car to beat. The YouTuber known as Speed Phenom recently turned up at a SHIFT-S3CTOR happening at the New Coalinga Municipal Airport in New Coalinga, California, bringing his Shelby GT500 to the 1/2-mile festivities. However, there was a C8 Corvette waiting for his super snake to fall into its trap.
Time to Saddle Up
“This is gonna be such a fun road trip,” said Mr. Phenom. “We are on our way to SHIFT-S3CTOR. We’re gonna be able to let loose 760 horsepower, and see how fast we can get. If you don’t know this, the top speed for the GT500 is supposedly limited to 180 mph. However, I’ve never seen anyone actually hit it. I wonder what happens when you do hit that speed limit of 180?”
For comparison, the C8-era Corvette’s top speed is 194 mph, with only 495 horses to push it to the summit. This little one has no idea what’s coming, does he?
Ready for the Corvette, Though?
“This is it,” said Mr. Phenom. “The ultimate spec for the track pack. We put in the man hours. We put in the work. We are nailing the setup for the straight-line acceleration. I’m really curious about this. I don’t think anyone’s actually tested this before, especially with the track pack.”
After his first run against a Camaro ZL1, the YouTuber removes the front aero, closes up the vents, and flattens the rear spoiler, all to get his pony up to 180 mph. His first run logged in at 159 mph, and his second fared little better at 160. When you have the aerodynamics of a brick, though, you’re not going to get one on the Corvette.
Defanged for Life
“So close! How is that thing so fast?,” asks Mr. Phenom. “I gave it all I could! No matter what I could do, I couldn’t close the gap! I couldn’t close the gap! The 495-horsepower C8 Corvette just took down the 760-horsepower GT500!”
We could suggest moving the big V8 behind the seats, but that might be a bridge too far for the Mustang. One more win for the Corvette, though!
