C8 Corvette Convertible Takes on Mercedes-AMG GTR in Rental Car Battle
Despite having more power and weighing less, the AMG GTR is no match for the C8 Corvette Convertible from a dig.
For decades, people have been renting cars and thrashing them. We can certainly blame some rental car companies for encouraging this behavior, as they regularly tout their performance car offerings as “fun” choices over a sea of boring econoboxes and crossovers. But this video from Drag Times, which depicts a drag race between a rental C8 Corvette convertible and Mercedes-AMG GTR, is still a bit more exotic than most.
The YouTube channel’s host, Brooks Weisblat, recently took a trip out to Las Vegas, Nevada with his buddies for the annual FuelRun Rally. But none of them wanted to drive or ship their cars from South Florida, so they needed to rent a few. Weisblat chose the C8 Corvette convertible, while his buddy went with the AMG GTR, which was the perfect setup for a drag race.
Prior to lining them up, the group was out enjoying some incredible scenery at the Valley of Fire, which is located around 40 minutes outside of Sin City. There are also some pretty entertaining shenanigans on display here, including a Lamborghini Urus playing around in the dirt and a Ferrari getting pulled over by park rangers for doing donuts in a parking lot.
On paper, the GTR seems like a shoo-in to beat the Corvette. It’s powered by a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 that produces 577 horsepower, backed up by a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Meanwhile, the Corvette makes do with its 6.2-liter LT2 with 495 horsepower, also backed up by dual-clutch transmission, in this case, an eight-speed. The Corvette also weighs more – 3,747 pounds versus 3,560.
All of that is moot once these two take off, however, as the C8 Corvette convertible leaps off the line and immediately places a large gap on the Merc. The AMG gets the jump on the second race, but the Corvette quickly regains the lead and never looks back. Subsequent dig races produce the same results, so the two decide to try racing from a roll. This time, the Mercedes finally nabs the win.
If nothing else, this pairing once again proves that we can’t count the C8 out against its foes, no matter what sort of on-paper advantages they might hold.
