From 2009 to 2013, the Corvette ZR1 reigned supreme as a record-breaking, earth-shaking car. Here’s what made it a legend.
The C6 Corvette ZR1 will always be one of our favorite cars. Even by today’s mid-engined standards, the C6 ZR1 stands strong as a powerful and incredible Corvette to drive. With stunning horsepower and low-end power, the ZR1 took American chrome and steel to new heights of performance. And it still stands as the third-fastest production Corvette built.
From inspiration to development, the C6 Corvette ZR1 story is one of persistence and chance, fueled by an appetite for velocity.
9) A New Generation, An Old Favorite
General Motors rolled out the sixth-generation of the Corvette in 2005. Following the C5’s successful run from 1997-2004, the team was challenged with continuing the C5 progress, and taking it even further.
This meant that the C6 Corvette would need to expand the Corvette’s capability, but also its appeal in overseas markets. As is often tradition with Corvette design teams, they went back to their roots.
In 2000, General Motors assembled the team tasked with designing the C6 Corvette. Chevy needed the C6 tighter with more power, and updated looks. Inspiration came from its rich history and racing legacy. But the genius would come in how this was incorporated with untapped potential and ahead-of-its-time performance.
