7 Reasons Why You NEED to Supercharge a C5 Corvette
Looking to amp up horsepower and performance in your C5 Corvette? A supercharger is an effective and affordable option.
We have nothing but respect for the C5 Corvette. Coming off of weak sales for the C4 Corvette in the 1990s, Chevy knew that the next generation would need to be primed and pumped to go hard. And they delivered. From 1997 to 2004, the redesigned, LS-powered C5 Corvette was focused on performance. These Corvettes have stood the test of time and are largely considered one of the most steadfast eras. Not only are they fun to drive, they offer a lot of bang for the buck.
But as technology evolves, so does our desire for more. Not that the C5 is lacking. A base C5 Corvette housed the LS1 5.7-liter V8 and the 385 hp Z06 variant ran an LS6 V8.
Of course, the Corvette has very respectable numbers. But some folks need just a little more power. Thankfully, there are a number of aftermarket options to increase the C5 Corvette’s already solid output. Supercharging is one of the most popular choices.
CorvetteForum member Toys4Life C5 recently addressed the positives supercharging offers for the C5 Corvette. In a video on his YouTube channel he breaks down 7 reasons why supercharging a C5 Corvette is a great idea.
“Supercharging has gained mass popularity over the past decade and for good reason,” he says. “Their ability to create massive horsepower increases without increasing reliability, drivability, or fuel economy has not gone unnoticed by the automotive performance enthusiast.” He adds that there are a number of options ranging in price from a number of companies.
Reason #1: Sound
Oh, does it sound good. “The subtle but distinct whistling sound … lets everybody know there’s something magical under the hood,” he says, giving us a great sample of that roar. Even better when he cracks the throttle and emits a sounds that “never seems to get old.”
Reason #2: More Horses
Pound for pound, there is no other modification that can so easily and effectively up the horsepower. His Vortech V3 supercharger has added 215 hp.
Reason #3: Drivability
Adding a supercharger is a fairly easy mod that can turn out 600 hp and still drive like stock. It requires minor internal work, improves performance, but is still versatile as a daily driver.
Reason #4: Reliability
Supercharging is much easier on the car than a large camshaft. Other mods such as heads, cams, and headers may increase power, but they come at a cost in terms of the car’s integrity.
Reason #5: One and Done
“One mod, and done,” Toys4Life C5 says. Rather than an upgrade here and a swap there, a supercharger is an easy all-in-one.
Reason #6: Streetable Horsepower
Ultimately, a charger delivers more streetable horsepower over cams, heads, and headers. His supercharger gives him a solid 525 rwhp with 100% street ability.
Reason #7: Increased Redline
Bottom line, supercharging makes driving a Corvette more fun. Seeing his ‘Vette go from 0 to 70 mph on the track really shows how the right set-up can unleash the beast.
Of course, this lead to a spirited discussion on our forums. Check out the video and let us know your thoughts on supercharging a Corvette.
