1969 Corvette L88 vs 1967 Coronet R/T 426 Hemi Drag Race

Watch this Corvette L88 and Hemi Coronet battle it out in one of the closest drag races you’ll see today.

The 1960s and early 1970s were a glorious time in America as manufacturers were cranking out all kinds of amazing muscle cars. The streets and drag strips around the country were also filled with these wicked rides as owners squared off with each other for the ultimate bragging rights. That sense of nostalgia is probably why we found this video from YouTuber Cars and Zebras so darn appealing, as it depicts a modern-day drag race between a 1969 Chevrolet Corvette L88 and a 1967 Dodge Coronet R/T with a 426 Hemi under the hood.

The C3 Corvette L88 needs no introduction, as it is both incredibly powerful and rare. It’s famously powered by GM’s 427 cubic-inch big block that cranks out a very underrated 430 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, though this car has been modified just a tad. This particular L88 is fitted with a TH400 automatic transmission and 4.56 gears, so it will also launch quite hard as well. Weighing in at just 3,454 pounds with the driver, it’s pretty svelte, too.

In the other lane, we have an equally cool ’67 Coronet powered by Dodge’s legendary 426 Hemi that is amazingly still in the possession of its original owner. The car came from the factory with an underrated 425 horsepower and 490 pound-feet of torque, but it too has been modified just a touch, with a higher compression ratio than stock. The Mopar machine is also backed up by a three-speed automatic gearbox and deep 4.30 gears, but it weighs around 300 pounds more than the Corvette.

The two cars line up for a single-elimination race at a F.A.S.T. drag racing event in the Factory Stock class, and the results are nothing less than stunning. Both cars take off at virtually the same time, and this race is neck and neck all the way down the quarter-mile. The Coronet just barely edges out the Corvette with a 10.05-second run at 125.80 mph versus a 10.95 at 125.63, but the Chevy actually wins the race thanks to its slightly quicker reaction time.

Drag races just don’t get much close than that, but perhaps more importantly, watching these two legends battle it out on the track is something we’ll never get tired of watching.
