Few cars are as timeless as a 1966 Corvette Sting Ray with big-block power and side-pipes!
There’s nothing like a classic, 1966 Corvette Sting Ray. Some people say Bill Mitchell’s car was too ahead of its time. But he created a timeless masterpiece that stands as a high watermark not just for Corvettes, but for automotive styling.
Owned since 1978, this 1966 Corvette Sting Ray convertible is extremely well maintained. It looks properly old-school, finished in maroon with a black vinyl interior. 15 inch turbine-style wheels with knock-offs add to the classic look. And the soundtrack of a big block 427 cubic inch V-8 blasts in stereo through those side-pipes.
The aesthetics of the interior look original, straightforward and functional. The dual cowl dash frames the cockpit. A full set of gauges surround the steering wheel column and the chrome shift lever falls close to hand. Even the wood rim steering wheel adds to the sense of purpose. It all just works together.
Equipped with LS6 cylinder heads, the 427ci V8 is bored .030″ over. As a nice custom touch, the Holley four-barrel carburetor tops the body-colored intake manifold. A Muncie four-speed puts down the power to the rear wheels. And unlike older Sting Rays with drum brakes, this one is equipped with four wheel discs providing decent stopping power.
The design of the C2 Sting Ray set the pace for automotive design of the 1960s. The fiberglass body sports the right mix of creases and bulges. And the pop-up headlamps integrate so well with the lines of the car.
The owner of this Sting Ray restored the car in the 1990s. Engine work occurred prior to their ownership, but the 427 appears original. Regardless of originality, the restoration kept the classic, timelessness of the C2 intact. Attempts to improve the design rarely work out. And the owner of this 1966 understood this.
