Projects & Builds: Turning a C4 Corvette Into… a Dual Motor EV???

electric C4 Corvette

After LS-Swapping a Tesla, YouTuber Rich Rebuilds found a (not-mint) 40th Anniversary Edition C4 Corvette he plans to make all-electric.

It seems like Rich Benoit from Rich Rebuilds is not shying away from stirring up controversies right now. The YouTuber unveiled an LS-swapped Tesla Model S at the recently culminated SEMA 2021. In Rich Rebuilds’ most recent video, the YouTuber reveals that his next project will involve building a battery-powered electric C4 out of what he likes to call the “worst Corvette”. The video itself is a fun watch, which follows Rich Benoit and Steven Salowsky as they try and overcome a series of mishaps.

The car that the duo bought off of Facebook Marketplace is a base version of the 40th Anniversary Edition C4, which came equipped with a Tuned Port Injection 5.7-liter LT1 motor as standard. The car also seems to have the Z25 option, which at the time retailed for $1455. Chevrolet only produced 6,749 40th Anniversary Editions with the Z25 package, which included red seats, special Ruby red paint, and anniversary emblems for the exterior.

In the video, Rich shares why he considers the C4 to be the worst Corvette. “the most polarizing Corvette ever! Now some call it (C4) the futuristic clean minimalism of the new era of automobile. Others called it a door wedge,” said Benoit. He further added, “1983 saw no ‘Vettes, as Chevy was too busy not making a t-top, and had to redesign the chassis. So, it skipped the year to bring you a shape that well didn’t look like it had much thought, but it’s arguably the least desirable Corvette, and usually the cheapest now.”

Rich is also the proud owner of a C6 “General Zod” Z06, which produces 650 horsepower at the wheel.

Since the used car market is kind of a fritz right now, Rich decided to use a C4 Corvette for his next project. Rich reasons that with the prices of C6 ‘Vettes skyrocketing right now, a more affordable C4 will make a great project car. For the uninitiated, Rich is no stranger to Corvettes. Surprisingly enough, it looks like the YouTuber decided not to carry out a thorough pre-purchase inspection, probably in a bid to highlight its importance through the video.

Rich is also responsible for many EV conversions, which include star creations like the Tesla-powered AWD Chevy Squarebody pickup truck, and an all-electric Mini Cooper, which he built for less than $3000. After going over all the parts that failed during his General Zod Z06 build, Rich decided that he wants to go electric with the C4. Interestingly enough futuristic and minimalist design like that of this C4 ‘Vette is very much in fashion when it comes to modern EVs. So, it looks like rich has found himself a match made in heaven.

“I think we should do this on a budget, and what we should do is kind of use the components that we already have, as opposed to going out and sourcing new things. It’s more, I guess, you could say, green this way, it’s sustainable you know,” said Benoit. He further added, “I think we could do this on another budget. I think there’s only a couple other things we need; a motor number one, and potentially I’m thinking we could do two motors man if the price is right.”
