Michelin Launches New Pilot Sport 5 and Primacy 4+ Tires
Need new tires for your Corvette? Checkout the latest generation of summer tires just released by Michelin.
What tires should I buy for my Corvette? It is a question that gets asked and re-asked time and time again. And it is for good reason. The tires are arguably the most important part of your car. They are the only part of the car to actually touch the ground. Technically other parts of your car can touch the ground, but that usually indicates big trouble. Anyway, often when the question is asked the answer given is to buy one of the Michelin performance tires. And now Michelin is bringing out two new contenders for your consideration. The new Pilot Sport 5 is the sportier of the two. And the new Primacy 4+ is a more comfort-oriented summer tire.
Michelin tires are some of the best on the market. And while the company makes fantastic tires, they are not so great at naming them. Their line of tires can get a bit confusing. For example, do you know the difference between the Pilot Sport 4, Pilot Sport 4 S, and Pilot Super Sport? It is easy to mix them up for sure. We will take a look at the two newest entries and pay close attention to the names, so you know what you are getting.
Pilot Sport 5
The Michelin Pilot Sport 5 is a Maximum Performance summer tire. It is the successor to the well-regarded Pilot Sport 4. The new Pilot Sport 5 offers the performance you want from a dedicated summer tire but also offers improved longevity. It will help you tackle the backroads thanks to the Dynamic Response technology. “A hybrid Aramid and Nylon ply forms a belt around the complete tire structure to guarantee optimum transmission of driving instructions and further increase driving pleasure.” The tire also offers excellent control and braking in both wet and dry conditions. “The Dual Sport Tread Design technology allows for tread optimization, with more performance in the wet thanks to the inner part of the tread and in the dry thanks to its outer tread blocks.” This tire will be available worldwide beginning on March 1. And it will be offered in 50 different sizes.
Primacy 4+
The Primacy 4+ does not have the same outright performance as the Sport 5. However, it is still a summer tire that offers good performance and is more comfortable and longer lasting. The tire has Michelin EverGrip technology. What this does is combines two layers of rubber in order to offset the loss of tread depth and thus continue to better evacuate water when worn. It will work fine on your Corvette, but it would probably be an even better match for your daily driver sedan or SUV where safety and tread life might be a higher priority than outright grip. The Primacy 4+ will also be available in March with an initial offering of 82 sizes. By the end of the year Michelin will offer it in 121 sizes for wheels ranging from 16 to 21 inches in diameter.
What to Expect
Michelin has a long history of making exceptional tires. We suspect that the new Pilot Sport 5 and Primacy 4+ will continue that tradition. If you were eyeing up a new set of tires for the summer anyway, you might want to hold off just a little bit longer and checkout the latest offerings coming from Michelin. The new Z06 with the Z07 Performance Package will be equipped with Michelin (Pilot Sport Cup 2) tires. So if Chevrolet trusts Michelin on their latest and greatest Corvette, then you probably can as well.
