Massive 18-Car Corvette Pace Car Collection Headed to Auction
This amazing Corvette pace car collection includes some of the real thing, replicas, and rare examples of its breed.
Among the many things the Corvette is known for, America’s sports car has a long history of serving as the pace car for numerous motorsports events, including, of course, the iconic Indianapolis 500. Over the past several decades, General Motors has churned out its fair share of Corvette pace cars to celebrate this frequent occasion, generally in limited numbers. That has prompted many to try and collect these cool machines like diecast cars, including Dr. Richard Foster, whose 18-car Corvette pace car collection is going up for grabs at Mecum’s upcoming Indy auction, fittingly enough.
This impressive collection of Corvette pace cars, festival cars, and pace car replicas will be sold as one lot with an auction estimate of $1.5-$1.7 million, giving someone the chance to immediately obtain an entire collection of cars rather than piecing them together, one by one. It’s a cool opportunity for certain, especially when we take a look at what this giant lot consists of.
Dr. Foster’s collection includes two Official Corvette pace cars, eight IMS-authorized replicas, six Corvette Pace Car Editions, and a brand new 2022 model that hasn’t yet been built, while four of the vehicles in this group have earned honors from the likes of Bloomington Gold and NCRS. It dates back as early as a 1978 Corvette pace car with just 50 miles on the clock, followed by a 1986 Pace Car Edition with 17k original miles.
Moving into the more modern era, a 1995 Pace Car Edition touts just 121 miles and is Bloomington Gold Benchmark Certified, while a rare, one-of-547 1998 Pace Car Edition is fitted with a six-speed manual and has just 17 miles. There’s also a Bloomington Gold Certified 2003 Chevrolet Corvette 50th Anniversary Coupe with 10 miles, a 2004 Chevrolet Corvette pace car used in the actual Indy 500 that year, a 1-of-8 2005 pace car, 1-of-6 2006 model, and a 1-of-500 2007 Pace Car Edition.
Rounding out this amazing collection are a 2008 Pace Car Edition, 2013 Corvette ZR1 60th Anniversary pace car replica, 2014 Corvette pace car replica, 2015 Corvette Z06 pace car replica, 2017 Corvette Grand Sport pace car replica, 2019 Corvette ZR1 pace car replica, 2019 Corvette Grand Sport pace car replica, 2022 Corvette pace car replica, and 2020 Corvette pace car replica.
While it will take someone with the means and the garage space to bring it home and house it, if this impressive pace car collection isn’t enough to pique the interest of any red-blooded Corvette fan, well, we’re not sure what will.
