C7 Corvette Test Drive Theft

The wannabe thief gave the dealer his actual license before test driving and trying to steal the C7 Corvette.

The Corvette has long been a popular target for thieves, and for good reason – it’s a great-looking, high-performing sports car, one that most people would love to own. While that makes it great to own, these positive qualities also make the Corvette a desirable vehicle among thieves, unfortunately. However, while we’ve seen some clever attempts to steal America’s sports car over the years, what went down in Newnan, Georgia recently most certainly doesn’t fit in that category after a man unsuccessfully tried to steal a C7 Corvette during a test drive.

According to Fox 5 News, the man was looking at cars for sale at Atlanta Luxury Motors when he happened across the yellow C7 Corvette sitting on the lot. He expressed interest in taking it for a test drive, and even handed over his actual driver’s license so that the dealer could make a copy of it – a common practice in the automotive world. A salesperson from the dealership accompanied him on the short trip, unbeknownst as to what was going to happen next.

At some point during that test drive, the man asked the salesperson if they could switch seats, because he wanted to feel what it was like to ride on the passenger side. But instead of swapping positions, he waited until the dealer employee had exited the vehicle, then took off. The salesperson did what anyone would do – he called his employer, who promptly called police. Shortly thereafter, the law caught up with the bright yellow C7 Corvette and the thief, who seemed a bit stunned that he had been caught, surprisingly, since he had given the dealer his actual driver’s license.

“He pulled over initially. He didn’t try to flee. But he did not comply with commands,” said Coweta County Deputy Chris Teare. “He locked the vehicle and rolled the windows up. He wouldn’t get out for several minutes. But he didn’t run or anything like that.” The man eventually did comply and get out of the vehicle, and was charged with theft by taking motor vehicle, obstruction, and assault. Turns out, he’s also a suspect in another successful Corvette test drive theft, so perhaps he thought he could get away with it once again, but this time, his luck simply ran out.
