A C8 Corvette was among a bevy of pricey rides police found – along with a hefty amount of drugs.

Automotive theft is unfortunately on the rise, and thieves are coming up with all sorts of new and innovative ways to make off with vehicles from both individuals, dealerships, and even holding yards at production facilities. The latest tale related to this particular type of crime comes to us from Southern California, where a 39-year-old man was recently arrested for the fraudulent purchase of 35 cars worth $2.3 million – including a C8 Corvette – following a two-month-long investigation by the California Highway Patrol Southern Division Special Services Vehicle Theft Unit.

Police didn’t say how the man purchased these vehicles, but the work was apparently done at a number of local dealerships, after which he was storing the vehicles at an address in San Fernando Valley. When they arrived on the scene, law enforcement quite literally struck the jackpot in more ways than one. For starters, there were cars quite literally scattered everywhere, mostly consisting of luxurious and exotic rides from Aston Martin, Bentley, BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lexus, Mercedes Benz, and Porsche, along with the C8 Corvette.

As if that wasn’t enough, the property also housed a marijuana grow operation consisting of a whopping 400 plants. Clearly, the person charged in this case wasn’t terribly worried about being caught, but now, he’s facing some serious charges and a lengthy jail sentence, though he has already been released on bond.

What’s particularly interesting about this entire situation is the fact that these expensive machines were sitting parked in the yard, in tall grass – not some garage or building somewhere. With weeds growing up around them, it’s unclear what the culprit’s plan for them was – would he drive them, sell them, or part them out, perhaps? Maybe the truth will eventually come out, but right now, this is truly a strange situation.

It’s also currently unclear what will happen to all of these poor vehicles. Perhaps they will eventually be returned to the dealers that unknowingly sold them to a criminal, or maybe they’ll wind up being auctioned off. Either way, it isn’t surprising that the culprit was caught, given his distaste for being discreet.
