Low-Mile 1989 Callaway Corvette Twin Turbo Convertible Is One Cool Find
This well-kept 1989 Callaway Corvette Twin Turbo convertible is a truly special and quite rare relic from the past.
Most Corvette fans are familiar with the story of the Callaway Corvette Twin Turbo models and their impact on performance back in the 1980s, a time when that sort of thing was pretty hard to come by. The long-time tuner’s turbocharged Corvettes were true poster cars that are highly sought after today, which makes this 1989 Callaway Corvette Twin Turbo convertible up for grabs at Bring a Trailer quite notable, especially since it presents in like-new condition.
This 1989 Callaway Corvette Twin Turbo convertible is also incredibly rare as number 64 of just 68 produced for this particular model year. It was originally purchased new by the seller’s father, who ordered it via Regular Production Code (RPO) B2K at his local Chevy dealer and took it on a nationwide show tour before the son acquired it back in 2007. Regardless, it hasn’t been driven much, as there are just 16k original miles showing on the odometer.
The white drop top has everything one could want from a period Callaway Corvette, including the AeroBody kit, which consists of an updated front fascia and grille, fender and quarter panel vents, a removable hardtop, and revised rear bumper and tail panel. Meanwhile, four-wheel vented disc brakes are covered up by Callaway’s 17-inch Dymag magnesium wheels fitted with Corvette center caps and wrapped with BFGoodrich G-Force Sport tires.
The interior is finished in contrasting red leather seats, along with matching carpet and door panels, with a number of black components present to break it up. Along with a Callaway badge, the Corvette also features a leather-wrapped steering wheel, digital instrumentation, automatic climate control, a Delco/Bose cassette stereo, and power windows, locks, and mirrors.
The real story lies under the hood, however, where GM’s 5.7-liter L98 V8 was heavily upgraded by Callaway with the addition of a pair of water-cooled Rotomaster T04 turbos, two intercoolers, and upgraded internals, which boosted output to 382 horsepower and 562 pound-feet of torque, which flows to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission.
This low-mile Callaway Twin Turbo convertible is a truly rare machine that’s been very well taken care of by a single family over the last few decades. Throw in the fact that it’s also historically significant for more reasons than one, and this car is obviously a very special find.
