David James, a beloved member of the Corvette Racing team, shut down the fundraiser when he had enough to cover the bills.

David James, a 21-year member of the Corvette Racing team, has served many roles in his decades in the world of motorsports. He’s wrenched on race cars, driven transport trucks to and from the track, and even worked as a member of the pit crew. Over that same time period, James has become a beloved member of the Corvette Racing team and has mentored numerous young, aspiring crew members, serving as a true role model for many. Unfortunately, James recently found out that he has cancer, and has been undergoing radiation therapy while also working full-time.

As many are well aware, cancer treatment is not cheap, which is why Corvette Racing photographer Richard Prince organized a fundraiser for James over at GiveSendGo with a goal of raising just over $17k – enough to cover James’ medical bills. It didn’t take very long to not only hit that goal but exceed it, as the fundraiser quickly crested $20k and was shut down at James’ request. Unsurprisingly, James didn’t want to take more money than he needed, which just tells you what a standup guy he really is.

“He’s the one who went out of his way on many occasions to detour while driving the transporter to and from a race to make a surprise visit to the National Corvette Museum or to visit a child who was unwell,” Prince said. “Just imagine what it did for a child suffering from a serious illness when a team transporter pulled up to his house, the liftgate came down, and a factory Corvette race car came out! Since the beginning of the program, DJ has been front and center helping bring Corvette fans from around the world together into one unified family – the Corvette Nation.”

“Dear friends, I am truly humbled and in awe,” James wrote in response to this generosity.  “I would like to thank everyone for your generosity and how blessed I am (Denise too). When we saw this we both cried in happiness. What a blessing you all have been in my life. There’s so much I would love to say but, so hard to put into words and writing. I would like to thank each of you personally but for now, I will thank everyone through this note. Your generosity and words of encouragement mean more to Denise and I than I can express with words.”
