Dealer Tries to ‘Steal’ C8 Corvette Back From Owner in Bizarre Incident
A simple service visit for a C8 Corvette led to a series of strange events and accusations flying from both parties involved.
We come across interesting, funny, and downright bizarre stories in the Corvette Forum all the time, but recently, a truly strange incident caught our attention, as well as the attention of many, many other members. This story comes to us from Z0Sick6, whose friend had a bit of a run-in with a Chevy dealer over his C8 Corvette, which was left at the dealership overnight for service. All of this starts out in a pretty routine manner, but the series of events that followed that drop-off are quite literally unprecedented, at least to our knowledge.
“My buddy had his car in for service, and they told him it would be locked away inside as they had to keep it overnight,” the OP explained. “He specifically stated not to leave the car outside. His wife and him were out to dinner and drove by the dealer at 8:30 pm – all locked up and closed. Car was outside. He pulled into the lot and took the car home. Fast forward to next morning, no call from dealer. Two dealer workers/techs show up to the house with keys and try taking the car back to the dealership. He was livid that they would show up and not even call him or anything, then have the audacity to try and remove the vehicle from the owner’s driveway. I told him he should call GM or the owner of the dealership and let Chevy corporate know this. If they were on my property doing this…I will leave it at that.”
The reactions to this strange tale are a bit mixed, with the blame being placed on both parties involved. “They are both wrong, to be honest,” said AceG. “One, the dealership shouldn’t have left it out on the lot, per the owner’s request. However, the owner entrusted the vehicle to the dealership. He didn’t notify the dealer that it was going to be taken back. For all they know that car got stolen and they were trying to retrieve it. It’s like renting out an exotic car and the rental company doesn’t want you to floor it but catches you flooring it, so they decide to come and take the car from you without notice. That’s not how it works.”
“Theft? The dealer had the car in for service, and it was removed from their property without permission? If I was the dealer, my first reaction would be to think the car had been stolen,” added StanNG. “But they knew the car was now at their customer’s home, and they still had a set of keys. There had to be some communication between the car’s owner and the dealer or this would have been reported as stolen by the dealer. This story, as presented, doesn’t make sense to me.”
That pretty much sums up how we feel about this wild incident, but we’re curious to hear what you think. Did the OP’s friend take things a bit too far by leaving his C8 Corvette at the dealer and then bringing it home, or is the dealer at fault? Head over here and let us know what you would do in this kind of situation!
