C5 Corvette

With the used and collector car market going crazy, is this amazing 4k-mile C5 Corvette really worth its asking price?

As most are already well aware, the used car market has exploded over the past year or so, mainly due to the fact that there aren’t many new vehicles available on dealer lots thanks to the semiconductor chip shortage and other supply chain issues. As a result, many have turned to the used car market, sending prices of those vehicles soaring to record highs with each passing month. The collector car market has benefitted from this phenomenon as well, leading to some pretty crazy values for vehicles that would have sold for very little money just a few months ago. That includes this C5 Corvette currently up for grabs on eBay with an asking price of $36k, which recently sparked a rather intense debate over at Corvette Forum.

The 1999 model year C5 Corvette is certainly a nice specimen and has accumulated just 4k original miles since it was new by one owner. The Nassau Blue beauty looks essentially brand new as a result and has some nice options including the Active Handling System, Bose stereo, and head-up display, but does all of that make what is otherwise a run-of-the-mill Corvette worth this kind of money?

Corvette Forum member PV_C6Z certainly doesn’t think so, which is why he headed to the forums to see how others feel about this particular car. Unsurprisingly, most echoed his thoughts. “Prices are absolutely insane right now,” said MWWarlord. “As shocking as it may sound, if the seller is not in a hurry to sell, they might actually get their asking price on this one. Ultra-low mileage C5s have routinely been pulling in the low $30k range lately. Add to that that this is a Nassau Blue M6 FRC that makes it particularly desirable. Now, if the car had higher mileage, the story would be totally different. However, at 4k in the current market, the seller will get $30k+ all day long.”

“Only a hardcore collector would want that one. A good FRC with moderate miles should be in the 20ish range,” added acroy. And that seems to be the consensus here – this is a very nice, very low-mile car with a manual gearbox, which makes it more desirable. But it’s still a basic C5 Corvette, and it seems that the current used car/collector car craze has fueled this inflated asking price. Corvette Forum member Old School summed it up best by saying “seems like a big number but, then again, I was watching the Mecum auction over the weekend and people have collectively lost their minds, so who knows.”
