This awesome-sounding 1968 Corvette L71 drop-top is about as cool as big block cars get.
While most all big block Corvettes are something special, some are obviously more coveted than others. That includes the ones built before smog killed off big horsepower numbers when we could mosey on down to our local Chevy dealer and buy some seriously powerful sports cars in various forms, picking our output off a menu as if we were ordering a steak at a restaurant. We’re talking about cars like this 1968 Corvette L71 convertible that’s up for grabs at Bring a Trailer, which truly represents the cream of the proverbial C3 crop.
This black beauty was recently refurbished, but it isn’t bone stock. Originally painted Rally Red, the previous owner had the car resprayed in black, which is complemented by factory chrome, a white soft top, and replacement 15-inch Rally wheels wrapped with 215/70 BFGoodrich Radial T/A white letter tires.
Red upholstery dons the cabin of this Corvette L71 drop-top, providing a classic color combination. While the interior looks fairly stock, there are some modern upgrades present here as well, including Hurst shifter, Vintage Air A/C, a vintage-appearing stereo with Bluetooth, and cup holders. Everything else is tidy and original, presenting in like-new condition.
Under the hood, you’ll find GM’s 427 cubic-inch V8, which was originally rated to produce 435 horsepower in top form, as is the case here. That means it’s also sporting three two-barrel carbs up top beneath a chrome air cleaner. Those carbs have been rebuilt, while a new distributor, fuel tank, and wiring were added as well. Power flows to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox and a 3.70-geared rear end, which was also recently rebuilt.
This C3 certainly sounds the part and has the guts to back it up, as we can see and hear in the video provided by the seller. It’s truly one of the great sports cars of all time, and while this one has been treated to a color change and other mods that will surely make wannabe car show judges cringe, it’s still pretty darn cool in our book.
