1967 Corvette L88 Tribute

This 1967 Corvette L88 features real-deal parts and has been tastefully done without going overboard.

The term “L88” is a coveted one in the Corvette world, as this hardcore factory racer was built in scant quantities and offered up some pretty incredible performance for its time. Today, L88 Corvettes sell for millions of dollars at auction on a regular basis, making them pretty much unobtainable for most of us. That’s precisely what makes this 1967 Corvette L88 tribute up for grabs at Bring a Trailer so enticing – it has most all of the cool stuff that a real L88 does, but in a much more affordable albeit less valuable package.

The seller went about creating this 1967 Corvette L88 tribute just a couple of years ago after owning it for around 14 years. Part of that process involved painting it Tuxedo Black in lieu of the Marlboro Maroon factory finish, along with the addition of a Stinger hood with a silver stripe, L88 hood badging, and a reproduction Bill Thomas dual side-outlet exhaust system with STS baffles. The whole thing rolls on a set of 15-inch magnesium American Racing Torque Thrust D wheels wrapped with reproduction 9.20-15 Firestone Indy tires for a proper vintage look.

Underneath, this L88 tribute car features power steering, vacuum-assisted brakes, and J56 dual-pin front calipers. Originally an L79 car, power now comes from a replacement 427 cubic-inch V8 with a real-deal 1967 L88 block, intake manifold, four-barrel carb, and road draft tube and hood plenum, as well as aluminum heads, a Straub Technologies custom grind hydraulic roller camshaft, and reproduction Bill Thomas-style headers. It’s mated to a close-ratio Muncie M22 four-speed manual transmission and a 3.70:1 Positraction rear differential.

Peek inside the cabin, and you’ll find a tidy black vinyl interior with a Hurst shifter, but few other amenities, as the seller has removed the radio and heater, adding the appropriate panels and even a new radio-less dash. All of the original goodies are included with the sale, however, including the car’s 327 cubic-inch V8 and Muncie M21 four-speed transmission.

While tribute cars often draw mixed reactions from enthusiasts, this 1967 Corvette L88 clone has been done in quite a tasteful manner, which makes it pretty darn cool in our book. Bidding for the car has thus far proven brisk, but when the auction ends, someone will be getting a cool car for millions less than the real thing.
