This very special 1966 Corvette coupe is a numbers-matching original that remains in stellar condition.

Big block-powered Corvettes are always a big draw at auction, and with each passing event, we see more and more pop up for sale and hammer for big money. But most of those cars are restored in some manner, with unknown mileage on the odometer to boot. That isn’t the case with this very special 1966 Chevy Corvette going up for grabs at Mecum’s upcoming Glendale, Arizona auction, however, as it’s a truly amazing find with just 16k original miles.

Even better, the numbers-matching coupe is one of just 5,258 1966 Chevy Corvette models built with GM’s L72 427 cubic-inch V8, which was originally rated to crank out an underrated 425 horsepower. It accomplished that mark thanks to a variety of upgrades along with its larger displacement, including a forged and Tufftrided steel crank and rods, forged aluminum pistons, 11.0:1 compression ratio, Holley 4-barrel carburetor, an aluminum intake manifold, rectangular-port heads fitted with 2.19-inch intake and 1.72-inch exhaust valves, and solid lifters.

That powerful powerplant is mated to a Muncie four-speed manual transmission, which sends power back to a Positraction rear end fitted with 4.11 gears for brisk acceleration. The Tuxedo Black exterior looks to be in excellent condition, while all of the original chrome is present and accounted for, including on the side exhaust, knock-off wheels, and Goldline tires.

Inside the tidy black cabin, there are many other notable options to be found, including Soft Ray-tinted glass, a telescoping steering column, and an AM/FM radio. There’s a little wear and patina present, but nothing that doesn’t make this highly desirable and collectible coupe even more so than it already was. After all, they say a car is only original once, and that saying has been proven true time and time again in the collector car market.

With low original miles, all of its original kit, and as one of just a few thousand built, it’ll be interesting to see just how much this big block Corvette goes for in a red hot market. The fact that it’s also selling with no reserve should make its short time on the auction block that much more interesting to watch, too.
