Unique Collection of 15 Red C4 Corvettes Is Headed to Auction

This collection of 15 different red C4 Corvettes conjures up memories of a certain hit by Prince many years ago.

In 1983, the late artist known as Prince released one of his bigger hits, Little Red Corvette, which used the word “Corvette” a grand total of 15 times. That little factoid never really meant much until now, because this lot of 15 red C4 Corvettes going up for grabs at Mecum’s upcoming Kansas City auction was either clearly inspired by the particular tune, or it’s just a byproduct of a rather large slice of irony. Whatever the case, this unique collection of C4 Corvettes – a generation that debuted in 1983 for the 1984 model year, ironically enough – is cool and quirky enough to warrant some serious attention.

This C4 collection is comprised of one example from each model year spanning 1984 through 1996, and also includes a few overlaps in the form of the mighty ZR1. The seller – Steve Clinkinbeard of Topeka, Kansas – bought all 15 of these vehicles between 2012 and 2014, but they weren’t his first foray into the world of the fourth-gen model. In fact, when he moved to Kansas in 1992, he owned a red 1985 Corvette, but he wound up selling it because it just wasn’t a great pairing with the dirt roads he had to travel on.

Clinkinbeard’s Corvette fever only intensified over the years, however, which led him to begin assembling this collection. He found an ’85 that was nearly identical to his beloved old car, and quickly began adding a host of rare and low-mile examples around it. That includes the 1984 model up for grabs in this sale, which has just 17k miles on the clock and is one of only 6,443 built that year with the four-speed manual transmission.

That car is joined by a host of other stellar red Corvettes, including a 1990 ZR1 that has a mere 13,472 miles on the clock is one of just 448 produced. The entire collection is a veritable wonderland for fans of the C4, Prince, the color red, or just Corvettes in general. The whole lot is also being sold at no reserve, so each of these cars will find a new home when they cross the block this December, so long as someone bids on them. And given how cool this collection is, we don’t think that will be a problem.
