How the Corvette got its groove back. Corvette engines in the 1990s were back to making some serious horsepower.

Oh, it’s on now. Corvette engines in the 1990s begin to pickup some real horsepower again. In fact, the least powerful engine on our list is significantly more powerful than any engine from the 1980s apart from the twin turbo Callaway L98. The 1990s also saw a generation change over from the C4 to the much more advanced C5. The C5 was such a leap forward that much of the chassis and drivetrain layout would stay relatively unchanged through even the C6 and C7 generations.

The 1990s also saw the introduction of some special Corvette models that brought some significant power upgrades with them. But by the end of the decade even the base cars were making enough power to produce some seriously quick Corvettes. These Corvettes would have no trouble keeping up with many sporty cars even today. There are some fantastic Corvette engines to discuss from this era so let’s get to it.

5. LT1 V8 – 300 Horsepower

LT1

Even the least powerful engine on this list makes at least 300 horsepower. This version of the LT1 engine was released in 1992 and made 300 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. The L98 in the 1991 Corvette made just 250 horsepower. That is a substantial 20 percent increase in power for the LT1. Also redline was increased to 5,700 rpm which was 700 more than the L98. To say this engine was a massive step forward for the Corvette is an understatement.
