Supercharged, 427-Powered C4 Corvette Is One Heck of a Sleeper
What looks like a nice, stock C4 Corvette is actually a fire-breathing beast underneath.
It sounds a bit silly to refer to any Corvette as a sleeper, given the fact that we are talking about one of the most famous, longest-running sports cars on earth. But most everyone is aware that certain generations – particularly the C4 Corvette – are a bit, shall we say, slow, at least the earlier cars. Thus, this stock-looking C4 Corvette up for grabs at Bring a Trailer certainly qualifies as a sleeper since it’s packing some serious firepower under the hood.
On the outside, one would be hard-pressed to tell that this is anything but a clean and original 1986 model, as its Dark Red Metallic paint looks nearly perfect, with the stock 16-inch turbine-style wheels still present and accounted for. The same goes for the bone stock cabin, which is finished in Saddle with black accents and no aftermarket upgrades, save for a set of gauges fitted in an A-pillar mount. But when you pop the hood, it’s a totally different story.
That’s because this C4 Corvette is powered by a 427 cubic-inch V8 build by Precision Motorsports Inc. of Concord, North Carolina. Based on a Dart block, the wicked small block is packing a host of performance upgrades including a ProCharger blower and intercooler, a TPI Specialties MiniRam fuel injection manifold, FAST engine control computer, forged and dished JE pistons, a forged Eagle Specialty Products steel crankshaft, forged Eagle Specialty Products connecting rods, Air Flow Research 1050 aluminum cylinder heads, a custom-ground hydraulic roller camshaft, Scorpion Racing lifters, Ultra Pro Magnum rocker arms, and a Melling oil pump.
Producing copious amounts of power, this beefed-up small block breathes through a Borla exhaust and is mated to a Richmond Gear six-speed manual transmission with a Centerforce performance clutch and a limited-slip differential. It’s a formidable combination for certain, and one that not only makes this C4 rather quick – but also surprisingly so, for those in the know.
