The long-rumored Corvette EV SUV is reportedly happening after all, and it actually makes a lot of sense.

Rumors of both a Corvette EV and SUV have swirled – independently of each other – for years now, and GM has since confirmed that the former is indeed in the works. Regardless, both of these things represent somewhat risky moves for the automaker, particularly since we’re talking about messing with a sports car formula more successful than most – one that’s helped the iconic model survive for 70 years now. However, it seems almost inevitable at this point that a Corvette EV SUV will soon join GM’s lineup, at least according to Auto Forecast Solutions, an automotive forecasting firm.

In this video from Autoline, we hear some details surrounding this future Corvette EV SUV, chiefly the fact that it is real and that it’s scheduled to enter production in May of 2026. However, this new offering also won’t apparently be built alongside its namesake in Bowling Green, Kentucky, but rather, at the Grand River plant in Lansing, Michigan. This actually makes perfect sense given the fact that it will apparently be produced alongside an all-electric Buick SUV and Cadillac sedan, however.

The good news is, GM has no plans to stop building ICE-powered Corvettes anytime soon, as this report notes. Building a Corvette EV SUV helps it accomplish multiple goals, however. For example, Ford managed to earn the carbon credits it needed to make the all-new 2024 Mustang an ICE-only offering by first using that nameplate on the Mustang Mach-E, an all-electric crossover, so it’s conceivable that this move will allow GM to keep the regular Corvette that we know and love around for a while, even as it fully commits to EVs.

Also like the Mach-E, GM is seemingly focused on making the Corvette its own brand, rather than just one vehicle. In the same way that the Mustang Mach-E instantly became a recognizable vehicle when it hit the market, the same could be said for a Corvette EV SUV, which could offer customers the same sort of sporty styling and performance as its two-seat brethren, albeit in a larger, more practical vehicle that also happens to further GM’s all-electric agenda. And in that sense, well, it makes a ton of sense, even if many enthusiasts aren’t going to like it.
