Cool Custom C6 Corvette Z06 Is Powered by a Flat Plane Crank V8
This truly unique C6 Corvette Z06 build is like nothing else on the planet, save for the C8 Z06 and some exotics.
Mostly thanks to Italian supercar makers like Ferrari, the flat plane crankshaft has become quite iconic within the automotive enthusiast world. This one simple change makes an engine sound totally different, giving it a high-pitched scream compared to a traditional cross plane crank powerplant and the ability to rev to the moon, which is precisely why GM decided to create the LT6 and stuff it in the brand new C8 Z06. However, this custom-built C6 Corvette Z06 offers up the same flat plane crank goodness in what’s likely to be a cheaper package, and it’s up for grabs right now at Bring a Trailer.
From the outside, one would be hard-pressed to tell that this is anything other than a regular, unmodified C6 Corvette Z06, however, as it’s finished in black with silver stripes and is even riding on the original split-spoke wheels, which are wrapped with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires measuring 285/35-18 in the front and 345/30-19 in the rear. Underneath those units lies a set of disc brakes with six-piston Stoptech calipers and slotted rotors at the front, which provides a hint of what’s going on with this particular car in general.
Underneath, the suspension has been fortified with LG GT2 coilovers, G1 sway-bars, C6 drop spindles, HD quiet end-links, and SKF racing hubs, all with an eye toward taming some extra power. This car has precisely that, though in a much different form than most would imagine – a 327 cubic-inch V8 fitted with a Sonny Bryant flat-plane crankshaft and a laundry list of other modifications.
Based on an ERL Performance Superdeck sleeved LS engine block, this powerplant contains Carrillo H-beam rods, Wiseco 12.5:1 pistons, a Comp camshaft, a Fast LSX intake manifold, LS7 CNC ported cylinder heads, a Holley EFI Dominator ECU, LG C6 Z06 Super Pro ceramic-coated long-tube headers, a dry sump oiling system, and a host of other tweaks that helped it put down 478 horsepower and 374 pound-feet of torque on the dyno. It’s mated to a six-speed manual transmission and an RPM Stage 4 Wavetrac differential with 3.90 gears for what promises to be brisk acceleration.
It goes without saying that this unique build sounds like nothing else out there, save for some exotic machinery and perhaps the new Z06, and that – along with its high-revving nature – makes it truly unique in a world full of Corvettes.
