This particular 1960 Corvette big brake fuelie is one of just 119 produced, and it’s a triple black example to boot.
There are a few keywords that get Corvette fans filed up, whether that be a particular variant like Z06 or ZR1, or perhaps even “fuelie,” “big brake,” or “big tank.” This stunning 1960 Corvette big brake fuelie that recently crossed the block at Mecum’s Harrisburg auction certainly checks off a couple of those boxes as a rare and quintessential example of the first-gen version of GM’s beloved sports car, and it somewhat represents the end of an era, too.
This 1960 Corvette big brake fuelie was one of the last of its kind, at least in terms of its front grille design and dual taillight rear, which would be replaced for the 1961 model year before the debut of the C2 in 1963. GM also began to see real success in terms of sales in 1960, cracking the 10,000 unit mark after serious doubt clouded the future of the Corvette in general. But for those looking for a special 1960 Corvette, well, they don’t get much more special than this.
This beautiful black-on-black-on-black C1 is one of just 119 examples produced with RPO 687, which features heavy duty brakes, a special front and rear suspension, front and rear brake air scoops, metallic brake facings, finned brake drums with cooling fans, and a quick turn steering adapter. This particular car also has a heater, radio, and shielding delete, meaning that whoever ordered it had racing on their mind from the get-go.
That theme continues under the hood, where this triple black Corvette is equipped with the top-of-the-line 283 cubic-inch fuel-injected V8 that was rated to produce 315 horsepower, which is mated to a four-speed manual transmission. It’s a desirable combo, and this particular car has a bit of a subdued appearance thanks to its dark hue and a set of black wheels with covers and 6/70×15 bias ply blackwall tires.
As it rolled across the auction block, this rare C1 managed to attract plenty of attention from bidders, however, who promptly drove up the price as it wound up hammering for $126,500. But considering how rare this particular Corvette is, that doesn’t seem unfair by any measure.
