Top 10 Corvette Race Cars in the History of Corvette Racing! (UPDATED)
The Corvette more than earned its title as America’s Sports Car on the track over the past 60 years. Here’s our list of top Corvette race cars!
EDITOR’S NOTE: The Top 10 Corvette Race Cars in the History of Corvette Racing was initially published in August 2020. Following the C8.R’s historic win this past weekend at the 2023 24 Hours of Le Mans, we took another look at this post and update it throughout. I hope you enjoy!
The Corvette is not just one of the most successful sports cars in history but also one of the most successful race cars. Corvette race cars began to compete soon after the production of the regular sports cars began. And they continue to be competitive in the most prestigious racing series in the world. Proof of that came just this past weekend. The C8.R picked up a win in the GTE Am class at the 2023 24 Hours of Le Mans. (After a damper failure early in the race dropped the car dead last in class!)
Impressive stuff. But the C8.R is not the only Corvette race car to rack up victories over the last seven decades. There have been many. So we selected the top ten, raking them in order of performance and historical significance. Of course, there are no losers on this list as even the tenth-ranked car is a legend.
10. 1957 Corvette SS
This might be the most historically important Corvette race car, but it didn’t actually have much racing success. In 1957, Zora Arkus-Duntov brought out the Corvette SS to the Sebring 12. The ‘Vette didn’t do so well, though, bowing out after 23 laps due to mechanical issues. It also didn’t get a chance to race in the Le Mans 24 after all of the U.S. manufacturers agreed to get out of racing before the feds made them get out. Yet, it would set the stage for everything to come.
