After hiding from the law, this 1968 Corvette big block is getting a second chance at life over four decades later.

Barn finds are a pretty common thing these days as classic car hunters roam the earth looking for valuable and interesting old vehicles that were abandoned for decades. Many of these barn finds involve old Corvettes, which can be quite valuable and lucrative discoveries, particularly if those cars tout the right combination of options. This 1968 Corvette big block car that was recently documented by Junkyard Life certainly fits the bill as a car that needed saving, but the story of how it arrived in long-term storage is even more fascinating than the car itself.

Turns out, this 1968 Corvette big block is owned by a fellow that goes by the appropriate nickname of Big Block Mike, who originally purchased the car back in 1974 for a mere $2,900 after admiring it across the street from his workplace. At the time, Mike was a teenager who was still attending high school, so you can only imagine what happened next – he not only used the C3 as transportation to work and school, but also to dabble in a little street racing.

Since he had the fastest car in town, Mike also developed a bit of a reputation – as did the Corvette. One day, Mike found himself being chased by law enforcement, who had also become aware of his illegal activities, but they couldn’t quite catch him. Mike managed to get his Corvette in the garage and hide it until the heat wore off, but there was just one tiny little problem with that – his red car had a black rear quarter panel that made it stick out like a sore thumb.

Too worried about risking his or the Corvette’s freedom, Mike simply left the car sitting in the garage for a while, which turned into an even longer while. Before he knew it, the C3 had been stored away for over four decades. Now, it has emerged to see the light of day once again, and is being treated to a full-blown restoration as well. It’s certainly nice to see this classic get the love it deserves after a life on the lam, and hopefully, Mike won’t find himself running from the law in it ever again.
