One of the most bizarre crimes we’ve come across in a while, this C7 Corvette top theft is as brazen as they get.

Over the years, we’ve certainly seen our fair share of Corvette thefts, whether it be criminals making off with the sports car during test drives, stealing them straight from dealerships, or just during a good old fashioned carjacking or theft straight from someone’s garage or driveway. But while we’ve seen our fair share of part theft as well – chiefly, things like wheels being stolen – we haven’t seen anyone make off with an entire C7 Corvette top, at least until now, because that’s precisely what went down in Memphis, Tennessee recently, according to WREG.

As we can see in the video provided to the news source by Memphis police, this criminal act took place during broad daylight, right in the middle of a busy parking lot outside of an office building on the east side of town. The thieves roll up in – interestingly enough – a black C7 Corvette, or all things, one that’s missing its own top. A passenger proceeds to get out of the car, break the driver’s side window of the yellow C7 Corvette parked nearby, and remove its top – all in less than thirty seconds.

After removing the top, the other person in the car gets out to help lift it in the getaway Corvette, which is rather humorous to see in action. The passenger struggles to get the top into a position that they can hold it while the driver heads out, meaning that it’s just hanging there right in front of his face – nothing unusual about that apparatus driving down the road, right?

Clearly, the thieves here would have been better served using something like, say, a pickup truck or an SUV, but then again, thieves aren’t always the brightest bunch. As for why they might have gone to the trouble of stealing just the C7’s top, well, perhaps they just needed one for their own car. More likely, they know that this particular part costs around $2,500 – according to the owner – and were just looking to make a quick and easy buck. Either way, the owner of the vandalized Corvette is now not only looking at having to buy a new one themselves, but they also have to replace that busted window to boot – truly adding insult to injury.
