GM Recalls 2022 Corvette Models in Australia Because They’re Too Loud

Some 2022 Corvette models are apparently too loud by Aussie standards, and the fix doesn’t require replacing the exhaust, either.

Here in the U.S., we can mosey on down to our local dealership and buy some pretty loud cars straight from dealers, not to mention slap an aftermarket exhaust on those same vehicles and make them even louder – at least in states that don’t regulate those sorts of things via noise laws. But in other parts of the world, noise regulations are a bit more strict, a list that includes Australia, apparently. In fact, according to CarExpert, GM was recently forced to recall a select number of 2022 Corvette models in that country because they were, well, too loud.

“Due to a manufacturing defect, the drive-by exhaust noise exceeds the limit defined under Australian Design Rule 83/00 (ADR 83/00),” the recall notes. “ADR 83/00 defines the limits on external noise generated by motor vehicles, motorcycles, and mopeds in order to limit the contribution of motor traffic to community noise. The vehicle is not compliant with ADR 83/00.”

This recall affects a total of 106 2022 Corvette models in Australia, a small number, but understandable given the fact that the sports car is a pricey import model in that particular country that’s sold in small quantities via GM Specialty Vehicles. The good news is, this is nothing that requires replacing hardware or hacking anything up, as the exhaust noise generated by the C8 can apparently be altered electronically.

“Owners of affected vehicles attend a General Motors Australia and New Zealand Pty Ltd (GM) dealer to have the engine control module software updated, free of charge,” the recall states.

Of course, this type of problem is nothing new to Americans that live in states such as California and New York, which are going to extremes to quiet cars on the road – in some cases, not even modified ones, but those that came straight from the factory with louder exhaust notes. While this isn’t a concern for C8 owners at this time – at least those that leave their stock exhaust in place – Australia’s more stringent regulations may one day be replicated a bit closer to home.
