C8 Corvette Z06 Drag Races GMC Hummer EV With Surprising Results
Though they’re nothing alike, the C8 Corvette Z06 and GMC Hummer EV put on one heck of a show in a straight line.
With more and more C8 Corvette Z06 deliveries taking place each day, we’re beginning to see the high-revving supercar subjected to all sorts of tests, whether that be on the dyno, at the track, or just via old fashioned on-paper comparisons with its competition. As many enthusiasts are well aware, a handful of influencers were able to get their hands on a new C8 Corvette Z06 before most, a group that includes Austin Everett of the YouTube channel Speed Phenom. Luckily for us, Everett isn’t afraid to wring out his new ride, and recently pitted it against a GMC Hummer EV in an unconventional yet entertaining drag race.
Obviously, on paper, the Hummer EV is no match for the mighty C8 Corvette Z06 in a straight line. In spite of the fact that it touts 1,000 horsepower from its electric motors, driving all four wheels, the giant EV pickup weighs just over 9,000 pounds – a ridiculous sum by any measure. It also rolls on 35-inch off-road tires, which aren’t exactly the best choice for hooking up that four-digit power figure on pavement.
On the flip side, the 2023 Corvette Z06 gets by with GM’s naturally-aspirated 5.5-liter LT6 V8, producing 670 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, which it routes to the rear wheels via an 8-speed dual clutch transmission. But with a curb weight of around 3,400 pounds, it isn’t even on the same planet as the hefty Hummer EV in that regard.
Regardless, when the rubber meets the road, this drag race produces some rather shocking results. The Hummer gets off the line like a slingshot, rocketing to 30-40 mph at a rate so extreme that it has a decent lead on the Z06 by that point. However, by the time both reach 60 mph, the Corvette has overtaken the Hummer, and continues to build its lead from there.
The Z06 wound up taking a full 3.4 seconds to reach 60 on this particular day, which was quite cold, according to Everett, while the Hummer gets there in just over 3.8 seconds. Even though these two vehicles are obviously nothing alike and don’t compete with each other in any viable way, this is a very interesting and entertaining comparison that proves just how far we’ve come in terms of performance – and we aren’t just talking about traditional sports cars, either.
