Even GM admitted that the 2023 Corvette Z06 LT6 engine vibrated badly during development, but it appears to have smoothed things out.
By now, we’ve all heard the praises of flat-plane crank engines, which sound amazing, rev to the moon, and can generate copious amounts of power – just look at the 2023 Corvette Z06 LT6 V8, for example, which is the most powerful naturally-aspirated production V8 in history. It also sounds absolutely incredible, leaving one to wonder – what, if any, are the downsides of such a powerplant? Well, even GM engineers admit that they struggled with vibrations during development, but that issue has reportedly been solved. Now, we have some video evidence to prove it, courtesy of Mid Engine Corvette Forum.
GM was well aware of the problems that Ford faced with its own naturally-aspirated 5.2-liter Voodoo V8, which was used in the latest-gen Mustang Shelby GT350, and wanted to avoid the same fate. Much like The Blue Oval, The General actually witnessed an oil filter spin off the engine due to extreme vibrations during testing, after which it quickly lost oil pressure and turned into a very expensive paperweight.
Obviously, this sort of news is rather concerning for anyone that’s purchasing or considering one of these cars. GM has even said that the 2023 Corvette Z06 LT6 powerplant’s vibrations are part of the experience of driving this glorious machine, which isn’t exactly comforting. However, as we can see in this “glass of water” test, the engine’s vibrations don’t appear to be bad by any measure.
A member of the Mid Engine Corvette Forum performed this simple test after taking delivery of their new Z06 convertible recently, placing a glass of water on top of the engine to demonstrate that it’s actually pretty darn smooth. He also revved it up a few times to show that even while accelerating or driving, that remains the case, though he doesn’t take the car to its lofty redline.
Regardless, the water barely moves at all, which should put this particular concern to rest. Of course, we also haven’t heard any complaints from owners about vibrations, but then again, this car is so new and being built in such limited numbers that it’ll likely be a while before those sorts of things surface.
