VIDEO: C8 Shoots Down Autobahn at Over 160 MPH!
Watch and listen as this Corvette rips down the fastest highway in Europe at speeds that put everyone else to shame!
The Autobahn, a name that resonated with automotive fanatics and speed enthusiasts for over 80 years. Practically since its inception, men and women used the infamous highway system as a proving ground, testing their machine’s limits and their own mettle as drivers. A time-honored tradition which continues today, with many sections of the iconic road still retaining no posted speed limit. Instead, the road offers a 130 km/h “advisory” speed limit.
The video we have today by AutoTopNL showcases a C8 Corvette that easily multiplies this number by two. The professional driver merges onto the Autobahn off a service station, propelling the Corvette at several points to blistering speeds with remarkable ease. A testament to the machine’s build quality just as much as the driver’s skill in handling it. Have a look with us as it tears down a section of the A 3 from inside the cockpit and engine bay!
Thrill Ride
Corvettes, at heart, remain grand touring cars more than anything else. They’re designed for spirited driving down winding country roads and open stretches of highway. A methodology which remains true to this day, as the LT2 V8 opens up with ease and finesse on the smooth German roads. You can tell the engine’s well within its element, hurling the car down the Autobahn at speeds approaching 270 km/h (167 miles an hour). Not to mention the sound it makes, that deep timbre a characteristic of Corvettes for decades. And going to the engine view, the torque immediately becomes apparent as the engine shakes like a wild animal. It’s a wonderful treat for us, and a tease to all those with the means who are considering a Corvette as their next car.
This particular engine is the LT2, a 490-horsepower naturally aspirated V8. It doesn’t sound like a lot, particularly when compared to the likes of the C7’s higher trim levels producing up to 755 horsepower from a supercharged LT5. But it’s more than sufficient for propelling the Corvette from 0-235 km/h (147 mph) in 21 seconds, according to the video’s timestamps. Chevrolet’s official quotes list the Z06 in the ballpark of 2.9 seconds to 60. Acceleration figures on full display here, that’s for sure. The engine also features a number of other party-tricks, such as cylinder deactivation. Which, according to the gauges, never occurred in this video, as indicated by the prominent “V8” displayed on the tachometer.
