Is Your Corvette a ‘Forever’ Car, or Do You Plan to Buy a New One Every Few Years?
While many intend to keep their Corvette for life, there are others that can’t seem to resist swapping it out for something else every so often.
For many of us, our Corvette was a car that we dreamed of one day owning before we were finally able to take the plunge. Others were passed down to us from family members or perhaps even purchased after they sat in storage for decades, making them a bit more special than the average daily driver we swap out every few years. However, there are also plenty of Corvette owners out there that like to simply trade theirs in every two or three years for a new one, enjoying the latest in technology and perhaps even the presence of a factory warranty. Thus, this begs the question – which type of Corvette owner is the most common? The one that keeps their car forever, or the frequent trader?
This question was recently posed in the CorvetteForum forums, and though it’s a fairly new thread, we’re already beginning to get a good feel for what owners think about this particular topic. Thus far, it’s a pretty even mix between folks that intend to keep their Corvettes for life and those that prefer to keep their garage a bit fresher, which is somewhat surprising. Then there are those with the best intentions that wind up with wandering eyes later down the road, as is the case with RapidC84B.
“I’m a self-admitted perfectionist and always go into a new Corvette intending to keep it forever and sweating the details about the car,” he said. “I currently own zero Corvettes and am picking up my C8Z at the NCM on 8/29. So that means I’m 0-for-8 on keeping any of my Corvettes forever. However, always waiting for the next one to be satisfied means you’re never satisfied. In a perfect scenario with unlimited funds, I would collect Corvettes from all generations AND buy a new one every 2-3 years to drive and not care about. I have honestly had more fun with my racecar where the cosmetics are largely irrelevant. But I also aspire to be the guy I met at Carlisle with his 500,000 miles C1 beat to heck. Kind of in my own self-created pickle trying to enjoy owning modern cars.”
Of course, there are plenty of other folks on one side of the fence or the other, with no in between such as this. “Buy it. Drive it. Sell it when something else comes along that’s more fun and exciting. It’s just a car,” said saleen556. Or, perhaps they’re just waiting for the right car to come along and leave a lasting impression, as is the case with jbp8653. “Bought 27 Corvettes from 1974 to 2013. In 2013, I got a 60th Anniversary ZR1. Have not seen one I like better yet. Still have it.” On the flip side of the coin, we have the folks with zero plans of ever parting ways with their beloved Corvette. “I never sell my Corvettes, I keep them forever unless there’s a wreck,” said vader86. “I have two, and I’m looking for a C3/Shark to restomod.”
Thus far, this thread has proven to be quite interesting, with a pretty even mix of lifelong collectors and frequent traders, and a little bit of everything in between. However, so far, it’s a smaller sample size, and as such, we’re curious to hear what you think. So head over here and cast your vote in this poll, leave a comment explaining your thoughts on this hot topic, and join in on the fascinating conversation!
