C8 Corvette Z06 vs Ford GT Drag Race

This matchup between a C8 Corvette Z06 and Ford GT is an incredibly close one, even though the two cars are quite different in many ways.

It’s no secret that the C8 Corvette Z06 is an exotic car killer of sorts, a more reasonably priced supercar capable of taking down vehicles that cost far more. In all fairness, that’s what we’ve come to expect from the Corvette in general over its decades in production, but the newest Z06 takes things to an entirely new level. In fact, the C8 Corvette Z06 is more than capable of hanging with the vaunted, super-expensive car that is the Ford GT, as we can see in this video from CarWow.

Not only was the Ford GT a cool half-million dollars to purchase new, it also trades for far more than that these days, and if you wanted to acquire one from the automaker itself, you had to be approved via an application process, which wasn’t really an issue for the person behind the wheel of this one – Camilo Pardo, who designed the second-generation model. As for the $137k C8 Corvette Z06 in this video, it’s also owned by someone we’ve seen before – Jesse Iwuji, Naval Reserve Officer, NASCAR racer, and YouTuber.

Outside of pricing and availability, these two cars do match up well on paper, with the Z06 cranking out 670 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque from its 5.5-liter LT6 V8. The Ford GT, on the other hand, takes a very different approach with the twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, which churns out 650 horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque. However, the big story here is weight – while the GT tips the scales at just over 3,000 pounds, the Z06 is a more portly 3,600 pounds or so, depending on options.

One would expect that – given this information – this matchup would be quite interesting to watch, and you’d be correct. While the C8 Corvette Z06 gets a solid start and holds on to a small lead in the first race for most of the run, the GT pulls past it at the end, winning by a mere hood length. For the second run, the duo start from a 50 mph roll, and even though Pardo hits the brakes just before the half-mile market, the Ford GT takes home an even closer win this time around.

Regardless, the duo decide to give it another go, but this time, the Ford GT experiences some turbo lag and falls way behind, failing to catch up by the time the half-mile mark passes. Things wrap up with a braking test from 100 mph to 0 – which the GT wins – but ultimately, it’s hard to say there’s definitive champion here, overall. This series of races is so close things really come down to the driver and conditions, and given the fact that it’s far easier and cheaper to obtain a Z06 than a GT these days, well, that gives the Corvette a pretty big advantage.
